For her New York Fashion Week return, Maki Oh designer Amaka Osakwe brought bold beauty, luxe embellishments and her Nigerian heritage to the runway.
After taking some much-needed time off, Osakwe has returned with a new vision that channels an eclectic range of iconic black fashion moments. In fact, she credits “The Boondocks” as a point of reference for her SS20 collection, which ultimately translated into powerful energy reflected in this season’s hair and makeup. “After binge-watching ‘The Boondocks,’ I was interested in the unabashed flashiness of Thugnificent and Gangstalicious,” she revealed to us after her runway show. “This inspired the heavy focus on embellishments, like pearls. This also transcended to the hair, where Tresemme took on a main style with the dominatrix-esque hair.”
From finger waves, gold grills, to dominating braids, Maki Oh’s return was an exciting ode to the creative, powerful woman. And, with the 10 year anniversary of her brand on the horizon, Amaka Osakwe is continuing to do what she does best: making cool clothes that showcase her heritage.
“The [Make Oh] woman is anyone who is forward-thinking and cool and wants to support African designers.”
